This is our final “unrolled” shot. We could add some more light leak to this if we wanted, but the result would be pretty similar. A few more tweaks in the adjustment layer with the default settings would do the trick. We want a slightly stronger red light leak though, so let’s increase the temperature on the red channel to +10, and the value to +6. The opacity of the adjustment layer is set to 33%.
The effects of light leaks can be useful, but be careful to not overdo them. If a light leak is too strong, the image can look too artificial or fake-looking. If a light leak is too subtle, it can be missed or look like a mistake.
The adjustment layer is by no means necessary to achieve a good light leak. The perfect light leak can be achieved using another blending mode, a different color temperature, or perhaps even a different paper.
In the image above, both of these issues play a role. In particular, the subject is located too far from the lens, resulting in a heavy light falloff (ambient light bleed) from the top of the frame to the bottom.
The light leak in this example is occurring due to the following combination of factors:
